A guide to natural and
synthetic
vegan leather.
HISTORY
Vegan leather originated in Germany in
the late nineteenth century. With two battles on the horizon, animal hideouts
were rationed. So, the German manufacturers went down in business and created
an alternative.
They came up with an element made from a
layered and treated paper pulp called Prestof. This leather alternative can be
used in almost any leather: bag, belt, case, and other items.
Prestoff had stability issues and
eventually went in his favor. The first synthetic leather to gain
international popularity was Naugahyde, created by the U.S. Rubber Company in
1920. Consumers favored it for its durability and leather-like look.
MATERIAL
AND CHARACTERIZED

synthetic leather) is characterized by fabrics that mimic the look and feel of
leather but are made without the use of animals. This means there are no

Vegan leather can be from a variety of natural fibers, as well as synthetic materials, including PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PU (polyurethane), and can be used for everything from jackets and shoes to handbags, wallets, and other accessories.
Most
vegan leather is made using polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane, both of which
are plastic-based materials (hence the popular, albeit maybe dated, a portmanteau
“pleather,” which originally stood for “plastic leather”). And while we’re well
aware of our planet’s plastic problem, “pleather” is still the more sustainable
and ethical option when it comes to handbags, belts, wallets, shoes, and
anything else you’d typically find using leather.
Both characteristic and manufactured Vegan kinds of leather offer cruelty- free option in contrast to customary leather items; with the regular choices offering extra eco-accommodating advantages by utilizing the results of food creation, inexhaustible materials and furthermore reusing the most far-fetched filaments.
Vegan leather may sound like an oxymoron because, well,
it is an oxymoron. So, what even is vegan
leather — besides being an ethical, sustainable, and cruelty-free alternative
to traditional leather.
Vegan leather has a couple of different names — you may have heard of “artificial leather” or “synthetic leather” — all of which describe more or less What it is: An alternative to leather that looks like traditional leather, but doesn’t use any animal products.
